Algae bloom causing moldy tasting, smelling water in east Fort Myers

An algae bloom on the Caloosahatchee River has given the drinking water in east Fort Myers a moldy taste and smell, Lee County Utilities officials said today.
The water is safe to drink, but the county plans to provide its 26,300 affected customers with water from plants that draw from the aquifer, not the river.
“That’s for aesthetics,” said Patricia DiPiero, the spokesperson for Lee County Utilities.
DiPiero said algae blooms normally happen when heavy rainfall washes nutrients from tributaries into the river, also known as storm water runoff. Read Full Story
